María Sánchez's implant had been acting up all morning. Nothing serious. Just little things. A flicker in her peripheral vision during breakfast. A half-second delay when she queried traffic conditions.

She walked down Calle de Alcalá toward her office. The implant fed headlines directly into her visual cortex, overlaying the real world with data streams, social metrics, optimization suggestions.

Then the city flickered.

For a heartbeat—maybe less—the concrete towers dissolved. In their place: mountains. Massive. Ancient. Carved into vertical tiers that glowed with amber light. Not electric light. Something alive.

María's implant screamed. Error codes flooded her vision. REALITY COHERENCE FAILURE. UNAUTHORIZED SENSORY INPUT. INITIATING COUNTERMEASURES.

She blinked. Madrid snapped back.

But that night, eight million people in Madrid would dream of mountains. Of stone cities glowing underground. Of voices whispering a word they didn't know: Asha.
